Is it wrong to call medieval films Sword & Sandal?
When Sword & Sandal films are more aimed at classical history films like Alexander and Troy. Cos I call medieval films like Joan of Arc and First Knight Sword & Sandal.
Good Q, yeah I think its quite hard to distiguish and i’m not putting forward one case or the other lol, but in general I think sword & sandal referred to any flick relating directly to the Roman Empire. And then expanded to include some of the fantasy/mythical genre of flicks such as Jason & the Argonauts, & Hercules. However, just to make thinks more confusing during the 80s I think it was generally recognised in the film industry that any fantasy element to a sword and sandal flick would be referred to as the sub-genre Sword & Sorcery (i.e Conan the Barbarian, The Beastmaster, Red Sonja) as this genre was already recognised in the comic book world.
I personally wouldn’t count First Knight & Joan of Ark as Sword & Sandals, yeah more medieval.
